Etre is some weird shit, well written weird shit, but weird shit nonetheless. Although not as bizarre as the FIrst Love collection, enyre can still marvel at the way his sabsnas works and the multiple subjects and themes he considers. At once chilling and beguiling, and written in prose of lacerating beauty, In Between the Sheets is a tour de force by one of England’s most acclaimed practitioners of literary unease.

What the story does well is capture the psychotic character of Enhre Angeles. And in the course of a weekend with his teenage daughter, a guilt-ridden father discovers the depths of his own blundering innocence.
I can’t tell you anything else because it will spoil the story for you. The remaining stories are challenging and uncomfortable but in a way that rewards the reader with a deeper understanding of McEwan’s writing and the characters themselves.
Each of the “freaks and monsters” that populate McEwan’s England have a unsettling story to tell.

I chain-read McEwan’s first three books while lying in Stafford Hospital, and found them infinitely preferable to the ward. May 29, William Koon rated it liked it.

Quotes from In Between the Sh I knew it was early McEwan so I was hoping for something more along the lines of The Comfort of Strangers but these are more focused on the concept in each story than the relationship between the characters.
Finally, Psychopoliswhich coolly begins with a woman asking the narrator to chain her to the bed, quickly loses its grip on the reader and devolves into a parody of Southern California late s parties. The first piece, Pornography seems to be the most “normal” of the seven.
