Electric Guitar – Sound Secrets and Technology What would today’s rock and pop music be without electric lead and bass guitars? These instruments have been setting the tone for more than sixty years. Their underlying sound is determined largely by their electrical components.
But, how do they actually work? Almost no one is able to explain this to the true musician with no technical background. This book answers many questions simply, in an easily-understandable manner. For the interested musician and othersthis book unveils, in a simple and well-grounded way, what have, until now, been regarded as manufacturer secrets.
The examination explores deep within the guitar, including pickups and electrical environment, so that guitar electronics are no longer considered highly secret. With a few deft interventions, many instruments can be rendered more versatile and made to sound a lot better – in the most cost-effective manner.
The author is an experienced electronics professional and active musician. He has thoroughly tested everything described here, in practice. These are two entirely different worlds. It was important for me to find a balance between technical and theoretical precision on the one hand and practical clarity for the musician on the other.

You may need a magnifying glass to see them clearly! In this day and age production standards must be of the highest quality particularly for technical books and this is a relatively expensive book for a mono production. Considering it is intended for amateur AND professional, I expect colour in the wiring diagrams at the very least for all those amateurs like me! However that is a massive let down that is not just isolated to this book as virtually every book on this subject assumes everyone knows what all those squiggles mean!
Although there is more info I wish this book contained hrlmuth with all my quibbles A very handy addition to my library but not the definitive guide I wanted.

One person found this helpful. Most helpful customer reviews helkuth Amazon. Great book covering a lot of things other books do not. My number 1 guitar electronics design book. Read the online paper that Helmuth released. It is essentially a section taken from the book, and is what prompted me to purchase the book.
I reviewed this already but it disappeared This has a lot of information but I had trouble lemne any sound “secrets”! Yet again another black and lemmme book that should be in colour and have high quality diagrams and photos which it doesn’t. An absolute sin for a tech book that uses colour references to describe how to do certain types of wiring. The diagrams are minuscule thus pretty useless.
I was very disappointed with this book which I was led to believe was the Guitar Wiring Bible. I bought it on the strength of raves by others which clearly indicated helmhth know more than the author An interesting read, for sure – Helmuth Lemme knows how to write a book! As the author states in the forward to this book, it is directed towards guitar players with basic to no knowledge of guitar mechanics, guitar electronics, and guitar history.
The interested player could definitely learn from this book. Good history books tell you not only what happened and when, but fundamentally why. And good science books tell you not only what happens, but more importantly, how. Published in both German and English, helmutn is plentiful of occasions to bring myths down. An unbelievable cult has developed around pickups, inflamed by advertising managers and music magazines. This is for the most part hot air and is all about sales figures”.
The denounce is true, and not only for pickups, but for musical instruments in general. The good thing about that kind of comments is that they are supported by pages of factual heluth. The more of graphics and pictures leave little space for doubts, though. I have years under my belt in the professional guitar making business, but was helmhth surprised of discovering a lot of contents that redefined my knowledge on many subjects, and that answered long held questions.
I found many “blind” topics, too; those about things that I ignored that I ignored. This book balances and integrates theoretical and practical topics, all accompanied with the corresponding references in the form helmuthh tables, wiring diagrams and charts.
It deals with the complete chain of sound from the strings to the amp, taking a deep look into each link of that chain: Guitar synthesizers have a dedicated chapter, too. The book ends up with a look into the passion of guitar collecting.
This helkuth a chapter in which the marketing resource of overusing the word “vintage” is demystified and replaced with clear tips to evaluate an instrument from an electrical, mechanical and ergonomic standpoint. If you are familiar with them, use this book to reach the next level. Don’t get scared by the somewhat pricey tag.
