Perhaps it was the author’s intent to leave something to the imagination, which is even appreciated, but if that was his intent, it severely contrasts with the rest of the story in which the issues are beaten to death with excess prose and dialogue to inspire a yawn or two.
A great novel is about change. The two friends wanted to rescue Jane, who in a kind of indignant hurry was always selling herself short.
